Sister Nora Smith, RSM

Smith, Sister Mary Nora, RSM, formerly Sister Mary Padraic, died on February 19, 2017.  Born in New Bedford, MA, she was the daughter of the late Ambrose and Nora Sparrow Smith; sister of the late Robert, James, Ambrose, Philip and Michael, as well as deceased sisters, Julia, Patricia and Nora.  Sister Mary Nora leaves a brother, Monsignor John J. Smith of the Diocese of Fall River.

Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1947 and professed vows in August of 1953.  With the exception of three years teaching at St. Peter School in Warwick, RI, her ministry in Catholic Education was spread throughout the Diocese of Fall River, in West Harwich, Fall River and New Bedford both as a teacher and administrator.

Upon Sister’s retirement as principal, Sister Mary Nora offered her services as substitute teacher in the New Bedford Public School system.  More recently, Sister Mary resided at Mount St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland, RI where she was lovingly cared for.  She enjoyed visits from family and Sisters of Mercy who remember gratefully Sister Mary Nora’s generosity and kindness in providing for the needs of those to whom she ministered and with whom she shared community life.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at St. John Vianney Parish, 3609 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, RI.  Visitation will be held in the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:40 a.m.  Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Cumberland, RI.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sisters of Mercy, 15 Highland View Road, Cumberland, RI 02864 will be appreciated.  Information and condolences please visit: www.galloglyfuneralhome.com
