Sherman Willis Dodge, Jr. Obituary

DODGE, Jr., Sherman Willis, 84, of Block Island, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 11, 2019 at South Kingstown Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

He was the beloved husband of the late Edrie J. (Hall) Dodge.  Born in Newport, he was the son of the late Sherman W. and Frances E. (Jaxien) Dodge.

Willis was a graduate of Block Island School and learned mechanics under the GI Bill from Fred Benson.  He was employed as a road equipment operator with the RI Department of Transportation for many years.  Also having many other jobs including, night watchman at the state beach, auto repair mechanic, Contractor, house watch business, lawn mowing and a lobster fisherman.

He was a Korean War Navy Veteran and was a Deacon at both the Methodist Church and Harbor Baptist Church.

Willis was a 32nd Degree Mason, Atlantic Lodge, a member of Eastern Star, American Legion, Block Island Post 36, Block Island Volunteer Fire Department and Block Island Ecumenical Choir.  His enjoyments included, reading, surf casting, gardening, feeding birds and watching them.

He is survived by a son, Charlie Dodge and his wife Clancy of South Chatham, MA; four grandchildren, Josiah Dodge, Eddie Dodge, Joseph Dodge and Amber White; five great grandchildren, Andrew, Brandon, Mikayla, Logan and. Edrie; a sister, Barbara Hall of Block Island and eight nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 10:30 am in St. Andrew’s Church, Chapel Street, Block Island followed by a service at 11:00 am in the church.  Interment with military honors in Island Cemetery, Block Island.  In lieu of flowers contributions to the “Mary D.
