Sister Mary Ellen Maytum, RSM, (formerly Catherine Maytum), 94, a Sister of Mercy for 75 years, died on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.
She was the daughter of the late Marion (Goucher) and Lawrence Maytum and sister of the late Madeline Fox and Bridget Green and William, Thomas, John, Nelson, and Robert. She is survived by 21 nieces and nephews and 38 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Sister Ellen led a busy and dedicated life as a teacher in Rhode Island. In order to expand her service to her students, she became a certified reading specialist. Sister’s talents were recognized when she was appointed principal of St. Timothy School in Warwick, a position she held for 12 years. Spurning the idea of retirement, Ellen became a pastoral minister in St. Joseph’s Parish in Providence. Here she served anyone who called upon her, but the infirm and the elderly held a special place in her heart. Sister was forced by ill health to retire in her early nineties. Sister Ellen will be remembered by the countless people with whom and to whom she ministered.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 20, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Church, 92 Hope Street, Providence. Visitation will be in the church at 9:15 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:15 a.m. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland, RI. In place of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 15 Highland View Road, Cumberland, RI, 02864. www.sistersofmercy.org.
