Thomas Doyle, Deputy Asst. Chief, PFD (Ret.) Obituary

Thomas Joseph Doyle, 83, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, September 18, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was the adored husband of Clare (Tamboe) Doyle for 57 years.  Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John H. Doyle Jr. and Margaret E. (Rodgers) Doyle.  He was a resident of West Warwick and Bartlett, New Hampshire.

Tom graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1956 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  He was honorably discharged in 1960 and joined the Providence Fire Department.  He retired in 1989 as Deputy Assistant Chief having served fourteen years as Providence Fire Marshal.  Upon passage of the Vietnam Era G.I. Bill, Tom enrolled at Providence College earning degrees in Business Administration and Fire Science.  He was later employed by Providence College for 23 years as a visiting lecturer in the School of Continuing Education.

Tom was a member of numerous professional organizations and commissions, including the 1976 Rhode Island Fire Safety Code Revision Committee and a ten-year member of the Rhode Island Building Code Standards Committee. He was a founding member of the Archangels, Inc., a non-profit fundraising group which supported inner city youth sports programs in South Providence and St. Michael’s Parish.  He served as a coach and president of the Elmhurst Little League and coach and board member of the Mt. Pleasant Little League. 

After retirement, Tom was a member of the Providence Retired Police and Fire Association and the East Greenwich Fireman’s Association.  He was an avid golfer and a thirty-year member of Potowomut Golf Club. In 2020 Tom was awarded an honorary membership at the club.  He enjoyed following New England sports teams and was a dedicated PC Friars fan.

 Tom was the cherished father of daughters Kathryn (Kevin) Genest of West Warwick, Jacquelyn (Stephen) Lachapelle of Lincoln, and Susan (Peter) Santilli of Hope Valley, and son Thomas (Joanna) Doyle of Medway, MA.  He was the beloved papa of Cameron and Cara Genest, Stephen and Maggie Lachapelle, Peter, Jessica, and Rachael Santilli, and Ryan and Matthew Doyle.  Tom was the brother of Patricia Norton and Maryann Darling of Cranston.  He was predeceased by his brothers John and Terence Doyle.

His funeral will be held Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 8:45 a.m. from the PRATA-GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 78 Providence Street, West Warwick followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Christ the King Church 120 Legris Avenue, West Warwick.  Interment with military honors will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Greenwich.  Visiting hours Friday 4:00-7:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 in his memory would be appreciated.  Information and condolences, please visit: www.PrataGallogly.com
